LTC Ombudsman Program receives Mayoral Proclamation: October Residents’ Rights Month
LTC Ombudsman Program receives Proclamation signed by Mayor Tom Henry to honor October Residents’ Rights Month and for their advocacy efforts for those living in our area nursing homes.
The LTC Ombudsman Program will be kicking off their annual fundraising event, Rockin’ for Residents’ Rights, October 21, 2021, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Foellinger-Friemann Botanical Conservatory. The event will include the celebration of a signed Proclamation from Mayor Tom Henry, appetizers from Club Soda, cash bar, silent auction, and time to tour the Botanical Conservatory. Monies raised will support the advocacy efforts of the LTC Ombudsman Program, a local non-profit who helps nursing home residents with addressing their care concerns and educates residents, families, and nursing home staff about resident rights. The LTC Ombudsman Program’s mission is: to champion resident driven advocacy for long term care facility residents. “They listen to me and take the time to help me when I have problems. They try to make it better for me in here,” says a local nursing home resident.
“Human beings – that’s who we are advocating for. What pulls at my heart is that we are serving a population of people that is now one of our most vulnerable populations,” says Aisha R. Arrington, Executive Director, who reflects on how hard the pandemic has been on the lives of those living in our area nursing homes.
The LTC Ombudsman Program answers over a 100 calls per month from nursing home residents and family members who have a loved one in a nursing home. Complaints include cold food, not getting showers, medicine not being received on time, and the harsh realities of isolation and facility lock downs during the pandemic. The organization wants the community to know that nursing home residents do have rights including: right to privacy, right to a dignified existence, right to be fully informed, and rights during discharge and transfers. Ombudsman services are free and confidential to anyone seeking help.
