Mental Health America of Northeast Indiana leads a discussion at 3rd Thursday Client Connect at NIIC, part of Mental Health Awareness Month, May 2023.
Entrepreneurship is often associated with determination, resilience, and the pursuit of success. However, behind the scenes, business owners face tremendous pressure, stress, and challenges that can affect their mental health.
Recent years show a growing shift toward recognizing the importance of mental well-being. As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, let us all take a stand, shun shame, and normalize mental health.
A research paper titled Are Entrepreneurs “Touched with Fire?” investigated the prevalence of mental health conditions among approximately 250 entrepreneurs, where 72% reported mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, and bipolar diagnosis. Manifestations vary. Some people with depression hold back from public speaking, while some avoid networking. It can lead people to a downward spiral.
Promote awareness.
Raising awareness about mental health is crucial. This can be done through workshops, seminars, and online campaigns that educate entrepreneurs about common mental health issues, coping mechanisms, and the importance of seeking help.
Providing information about the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges empowers entrepreneurs to recognize when they need assistance.
Create a safe environment for honest talk.
It’s also about supporting one another through struggles. Listen. Encourage. Connect to professionals for treatment.
Fostering an open dialogue through online forums or support groups where entrepreneurs can candidly discuss their struggles without fear of judgment can be essential in silencing the stigma on mental health. By sharing experiences and challenges, entrepreneurs can help create a supportive community that understands and empathizes with their mental health journeys.
No one has ever to feel that they’re alone in their battles.
Take breaks.
The need to constantly be available for work can be very overwhelming. Take time to unplug from your devices.
Take breaks for a walk or to get outdoors for some fresh air.
Schedule time for a vacation or a staycation to refresh and reload.
All of these can help you relax and recharge.
Redefine success.
Society often portrays success in entrepreneurship as solely financial achievements or the growth of a business. It is essential to redefine success to include mental well-being, work-life balance, and personal fulfillment.
Encouraging entrepreneurs to prioritize self-care, establish healthy boundaries, and seek support when needed will contribute to their overall success in both professional and personal realms.
Resources for well-being
Various resources are available to support entrepreneurs in addressing their mental health, from mental health apps that offer meditation and mindfulness exercises, such as Headspace and Calm, to online therapies and counseling.
The NIIC is dedicated to providing avenues to empower entrepreneurs to take care of their mental health as much as their physical health. While we are not healthcare professionals—we do offer business coaching tailored to the unique challenges you face. We also can connect you to mental health professionals, like Mental Health America of Northeast Indiana.
By breaking the silence, challenging stigma, and promoting available resources, we all can support entrepreneurs in achieving their professional goals and mental well-being.
